What is Giant Cell Arteritis? (GCA)

An autoimmune disease discovered by Hutchinson in 1890, often referred to as the “sister disease” of Polymyalgia Rheumatica.

Symptoms: Severe headaches; vision abnormalities; jaw pain. Physical exam may reveal abnormal temporal artery enflamed and tender to touch; a reduced pulse rate.  A serious risk of irreversible blindness is at stake. An experienced GCA physician should be immediately consulted (Rheumatologist or Internist is recommended).

Onslaught: As cranial arteries narrow headaches become frequent, intense and debilitating. Immediate physical examination is required to prevent irreversible blindness.

Diagnoses: Rheumatologists and Internists are recommended to evaluate patient conditions.

There is no reliable diagnostic too.  GCA is often misdiagnosed
