BABY BOOMERS
|
|
You Are At Risk!!!
|
| Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) and Giant Cell Arteritis
(GCA) target those persons age 50 and over. This puts the Baby Boomer
generation, 76,000,000 strong, at risk! A Baby Boomer turns 50 every
7.5 seconds! Only a few have ever heard of either disease. Early symptoms
are similar to Rheumatoid Arthritis. Both PMR and GCA are extremely
painful. PMR symptoms, if any, may be similar to rheumatoid arthritis;
GCA symptoms, if any, may be similar to migrain headaches. |
GCA can result in irreversible blindness.

Often Misdiagnosed
|
| Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) and Giant Cell Arteritis
(GCA) are often misdiagnosed. These diseases are accompanied by depression
and morbidity. Both diseases can remove one from the workplace overnight
- often permanently. PMR frequently leads into its sister disease
GCA |
| Incidence
|
PMR 700 in 100,000 (1 in 143)
GCA 200 in 100,000 (1 in 500)
This translates to 532,000 Baby Boomers that are at risk for PMR and 152,000 that are at risk for GCA.
|
Both can strike overnight without warning symptoms.

No Known Cure
|
|
Treatment nearly always involves the use of
prednisone
(steroid) but there is no known cure. The side effects of prednisone cover a wide range of negative health conditions. Prednisone relieves the pain but does nothing to effect a cure.

Research
|
|
Very little research into treatment and cure is being done.
