One of the main goals we are addressing is communicating what can happen if Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) or Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) suddenly overtakes us.
A life can and will change due to the intensity of these diseases. The medical profession does not know why we are afflicted there really is no cure and very little has been done in the area of research. Treatment is invariably prednisone, a steroid that can have devastating negative life changing effects on the patient's quality of life. One residue of PMR/GCA will be morbidity and "black-hole" depression.
As the population lives longer our health barometer should reflect medical progress and the dynamic steps that have resulted within the last twenty years. The professionals gave the above diseases a name in 1957 but what new treatment is being prescribed today?
Something must be done to wipe out the devastation. There are scientists in the United States and other countries who believe that we must investigate other challenging avenues for treatment that does not involve use of steroids, treatment that could bring important, fresh energy to this catastrophic situation. Most important is discovering the cure to relieve society of these life-changing diseases.
One can be out of the job market for months, years or permanently; Can suddenly be struck with irreversible blindness. The morbidity fills one with anguish, a lost darkness along with "hidden" paranoia. Pain is treated with steroids that never cure but only leave a residuum of negative after effects. The medical community is very sensitive to this condition which can demand a continuing and variety of treatments. Click here to read about "prednisone" and its side effects.
I continue to suffer from Polymyalgia Rhuematica. As an artist my professional endeavors have ceased as my hands no longer work with my brain due to the pain and the stifling of my coordination.
I look forward to bringing the message that our charity is dedicated to share. Be aware of what can happen overnight to the young, vibrant fifty year old and up!
